A Savior was Born – Into a Horrifying World

December 15, 2016

I’ve heard it said, “Our world is getting so dark and evil.”  I agree there’s evil throughout our world.  There’s a reason the Bible refers to Satan as the ruler of this world.  This is going to be a little different than your typical Christmas post, but I realized this year there’s a part of the story of Jesus’s birth we fail to acknowledge.

Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.  Then was fulfilled what was spoke by Jeremiah the prophet, saying:  A voice was heard in Ramah, Lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, Refusing to be comforted, Because they are no more.”  Matthew 2:16-18

How’s that for spreading Christmas cheer?

We talk about how evil our world is now, like Jesus was born into a better one.  He was being hunted from Day 1.  Herod wanted him dead and when he found out he was being tricked so he wouldn’t find Jesus, he got a little angry.  Imagine that scripture playing out in real time.  Authorities kick in your door and find your 1-year-old boy.  They haul him off to kill him.  This is just as horrific as anything going on in our time.

That scripture is really, really hard to read.  So, why is it important?

The same enemy that ruled over the unbelieving Herod is the same enemy that’s attacking you and your family today.  He may not be coming after the lives of our newborns, but he wants to destroy us.

I’m going to enjoy the Christmas lights, movies, songs and every other fun way to celebrate Christmas, but I’m going to let this part of this story take root in my heart because we can’t ever fail to realize we have enemy coming after us.
